Pandora was built in 1939 by Dixons of Exmouth. She is of clinker construction, elm on oak. Boats built of elm are very rare now. She is 18 feet long and about seven feet six inches beam. She has a galvanised centre board and can take the ground easily. She draws very little with the centre board raised and is very suitable for use in shallow waters.
Dixons mainly built work and fishing boats and we believe that Pandora was based on a proven small fishing boat design. Only two boats of this class were built – the other is believed to have been lost so Pandora is the last of her kind.
Pandora is in very good condition, especially considering her age, and has no structural problems. All her ribs are in good condition and none are sistered. She has recently undergone a refit, including repainting and re-varnishing and is ready for the 2011 season.
She has two berths although she is best described as a day-boat/weekender. You could certainly camp out in her, especially if you rigged a boom tent but there are no facilities such as cooker, sink or toilet. Accommodation is cramped and her interior is in original condition which means that some cosmetic attention would be of benefit.
Pandora has a electric start Vire BVR petrol engine of 6.5hp with forward/reverse gearbox. This engine is nearly new and has not been run for more than a couple of hours since being installed.
She is currently sitting on an excellent Snipe galvanised break-back trailer that has not been immersed. The trailer is included in the sale.
Prospective buyers should be aware that Pandora has been out of the water for about two years and needs to be sympathetically re-launched so that she "takes up". Initial leaks are inevitable with clinker built boats. As soon as she takes up then further leakage in minimal. She does have an automatic bilge pump which monitors any water in the bilge. Please note that Pandora is not suitable as a trailer-sailer and a mooring is preferable to keep her tight. Elm benefits from being kept wet and is a very durable and long lasting timber
